Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery works closely with the various centers for oncological, congenital and traumatic disorders, as well as other related departments.

The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at Erasmus MC focuses on the restoration and reconstruction of the body’s shape and function. Plastic surgery may be indicated when a person has extensive scarring or an abnormal anatomy after trauma, has had surgical removal of a tumor or was born with an anatomical abnormality. The goal of surgery is to restore proper function and appearance, and thereby improve the quality of life.

Our center is the coordinator of the European Reference Network on Craniofacial Anomalies and Ear Nose and Throat (ENT) Disorders.

The Erasmus MC is the largest tertiary care and academic hospital in the Netherlands. Our hospital can proudly offer the services of highly specialized medical professionals for the treatment of complex and rare diseases. Our department provides all reconstructive procedures available, and is front runner in introducing new techniques and performing clinical research to study our outcomes. These efforts are all directed at improving care and quality of life for our patients.

Oncological reconstructive surgery

The aim of oncological reconstructive surgery is to reduce the impact of cancer treatment and improve quality of life for cancer patients by restoring function and appearance of different parts of the body after tumor resection. This type of reconstructive surgery is generally performed after treatment for skin cancer, breast cancer, and cancer in the head and neck area. Oncological reconstruction includes reconstruction following preventive surgery, for instance in patients with a genetic risk for developing malignancies.

Similar surgical techniques are employed to restore malformations acquired following trauma. This care is all provided in collaboration with our colleagues from the departments of surgical oncology, maxillofacial surgery, ENT surgery, thoracic surgery, neurosurgery, dermatology, gynecology and trauma surgery.

 Hand, wrist and nerve surgery

Our physicians also treat hand, wrist and nerve abnormalities. Congenital malformations of the hand and upper limbs, such as polydactyly and radial dysplasia, are treated at the internationally renowned Erasmus MC Center for Congenital Hand and Upper Limb Malformations. Acquired and traumatic conditions that impair the function of the upper extremities are treated by our specialized hand surgeons. The best results are obtained by joining forces with specialists from the departments of trauma surgery, orthopedics and rehabilitation.
