Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Special Dental Care

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

The specialism of oral and maxillofacial surgery addresses any disorder relating to the mouth, jaws, face and skull. Oral diseases and facial abnormalities may occur as a result of infections, (benign and malignant) tumors, autoimmune disorders, congenital defects or trauma, amongst other causes. Surgery or other treatments directed at the face require special expertise on its complex structures, as these determine optimal function and aesthetics.

Physicians that are specialized in the surgery of the entire cranio-maxillofacial complex (the mouth, jaws, face and skull) are called maxillofacial surgeons. They hold degrees in both medicine and dentistry.
